Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

What are the SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet and aim to address various social, economic, and environmental challenges. The SDGs cover a wide range of issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water, sanitation, affordable and clean energy, economic growth, industry innovation, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice, and partnerships for the goals.

Each goal is interconnected, recognising the need for an integrated and holistic approach to development. The target year for achieving these goals is 2030. Governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals all play a role in working towards the achievement of the SDGs to create a more sustainable and equitable world.

The EMRC’s Strategic Direction

The EMRC’s Sustainability Strategy 2022/2023 – 2026/2027 aligns with a strategic review undertaken in 2021, and included local, state, national and international drivers, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainability Strategy is used to drive operational activities and alignment of priorities and allows the EMRC to meet the needs of member Councils while providing sustainable solutions for future generations.
